ALFA’s Final Event & Policy Roundtable
September 25th, Brussels
Join policymakers, researchers, and farmers in Brussels to shape practical policy solutions that will unlock the potential of biogas in Europe. Hosted by the ALFA project, this free event will spotlight project results and co-create future pathways for livestock-based biogas systems.
Biogas is a viable option for a renewable energy source and contributes to both economic and environmental benefits of those involved on a local level. The widespread adoption of biogas across Europe can foster more sustainable and self-sufficient energy. Hence, on September 25th, 2025, in Brussels, the ALFA project invites policymakers, researchers, industry professionals and related stakeholders to its Final Conference and Policy Roundtable event on biogas and its uptake in Europe.
Why Attend?
To foster the uptake of biogas systems at local levels across Europe, policies are needed that are grounded in both research and practical knowledge and experience. This event will serve as a unique opportunity to bridge on-the-ground innovation from inputs of the project alongside high-level policymaking, with the goal to co-create effective, timely, and practical policy recommendations to drive biogas uptake.
“The ALFA Final Event is not only an opportunity to share the project’s key results, it is a space to bring together farmers, researchers, and policymakers to exchange perspectives and co-develop recommendations for more effective biogas policies. If you are involved in agriculture, energy, or rural development, your contribution to this roundtable will be valuable” – Yannis Konstas, ALFA Project Coordinator, Q-PLAN
The Event
The day (10h – 16h45) will be divided into two sessions, a morning and afternoon session.
- Date: September 25th 2025
- Location : Comet Meetings – Louise, Pl. Stéphanie 20, 1050 Brussels, Belgium
- Registration link: click on this link here
- Attendance fee: free of charge
The morning session will feature a series of presentations and discussions showcasing the outcomes of the ALFA project and its broader research context, including:
- Keynote presentations from leading experts and policymakers
- Highlights of the main results and tools developed by the ALFA project
- Insights from related research initiatives
- Interviews and panel discussions about ALFA’s lessons learned
In the afternoon, the Policy Roundtable will include:
- Parallel breakout sessions to explore recommendations to incentivise biogas uptake and enhance public acceptance of biogas in livestock farming
- A dynamic discussion to co-design future policy pathways
- A panel discussion with policymakers and sector experts from the biogas and agricultural domains
The project cordially invites all those interested to register and attend, as the input of readers and members of the BCE is valuable for supporting the uptake of biogas systems across Europe.

The Project
ALFA is set on unlocking the potential of biogas production from livestock farming to enhance the wider uptake of renewable energy systems. It also aims to increase the share of bioenergy as a baseload energy source while ensuring reduced emissions from untreated manure and supporting the creation of new jobs and revenue for the livestock farming industry.
The Mission?
Upscale the biogas production from livestock farming as an alternative renewable source of energy.
Biogas production can offer both economic and environmental benefits. By utilizing manure for biogas production, livestock farmers can:
- Secure an additional source of income,
- Use the biogas to cover the farm’s electricity, heat, and transport needs
- Contribute to reducing emissions and enhancing energy resilience in communities
Overall, the widespread adoption of biogas as a source of energy will contribute to a more sustainable and self-sufficient energy sector in Europe, and its citizens will be able to utilise innovative methods for the management of their livestock farms.
Over the course of the project (2022-2025), innovation hubs have been developed across six countries (Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Slovakia, and Spain) to support 50 livestock cases in overcoming existing barriers to viably take up biogas systems.
Based on these experiences, the project is developing:
- A replication guide to assist interacted actors to replicate ALFA’s tools and measures in other regions and contexts
- Policy recommendations on EU and on national level that can help mainstream biogas solutions, incorporating stakeholder feedback from the policy roundtable
