From April 1st to April 2nd, 2025, the ALFA consortium and various project stakeholders gathered in Aarhus, Denmark, for a two-day event combining a project meeting, mutual learning workshop, a networking event, and field visits to biogas plants. The meeting provided an opportunity for knowledge exchange and deeper engagement among partners, researchers, industry experts, farmers and ALFA services’ beneficiaries.
Day 1: Field visit and Mutual Learning Workshop
The event began on April 1st with a full-day field trip showcasing Denmark’s expertise in biogas production. Participants visited:
- Frisjenborg Biogas in Hammel, where Manager Karsten Bo Sørensen led a guided tour of the facility, sharing insights into plant operations, feedstock management, and local challenges.
- Aarhus University’s Biogas Plant in Foulum, where participants gained insights about the university’s latest research on biogas technology, with a special focus on process optimisation and sustainable feedstock use.
These visits provided practical perspectives on both commercial-scale and research-driven biogas applications. Discussions addressed operational issues such as biomass quality, sand and straw residues, and opportunities for enhanced gas upgrading and digestate valorisation.
In the afternoon, a mutual learning workshop was hosted at Agro Food Park by FBCD. The session opened with welcoming remarks by Michael Støckler and featured contributions from:
- Bruno Sander Nielsen (Technical Director at Biogas Denmark and ALFA Board Member), who presented an overview of Denmark’s policy landscape and market development for biogas.
- Professor Henrik B. Møller, who addressed technological advancements and strategies for improving biogas system efficiency.
- Karsten Hjorth, CBDO at Lundsby Renewable Energy, shared his company’s experience in establishing large-scale biogas plants as a total contractor.
- Stephane Bosc from Ammongas presented on the development and operation of upgrading facilities for biomethane production, highlighting the company’s technological approach
- Frank Wennerberg, a farmer and GreenFarm‘s CEO, provided an inspiring presentation about the company’s concept and implementation in livestock farms with liquid livestock manure
Meanwhile, the event featured technologies such as GreenFarm™, a solution designed for smaller farms with limited grid access. This system enables local energy production from agricultural residues, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and producing nutrient-rich fertiliser with lower environmental impact.
Day 2: Networking Event and Project Meeting
On April 2nd, a hybrid networking event titled “Green Energy Connections: Biogas, Biomethane & Beyond” brought together a broad range of stakeholders from the biogas value chain. The agenda featured:
- Presentations by European biomethane cluster projects and their services
- Case studies from awardees of the 1st and 2nd ALFA open calls, including representatives from Denmark, Slovakia, and Greece
- Insights into market trends and policy developments from European associations and institutions (e.g. EBA, EDF, and EREF/EC)
The 7th ALFA Project Meeting took place in the afternoon, providing an opportunity to share updates across the various work packages and review progress to date. As the project enters its final phase, efforts are focused on consolidating outcomes, refining policy inputs, and supporting the potential replication of identified practices across different European contexts.
A sincere thank you to all project partners, speakers, and stakeholders who participated – both online and in person. Special appreciation goes to our Danish hosts and contributors, including representatives from BioCirc, Aarhus University, Biogas Denmark, Lundsby Renewable Solutions, Ammongas, GreenFarm™, SEGES Innovation, GrønGas A/S, and others.
